During the gun debate, attacks on the National Rifle Association are pretty commonplace, since the organization is at the forefront of gun issues. But TV sports commentator Bryant Gumbel may have just taken it to a new level.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, when Gumbel was asked a question about his segment on the “Eat What You Kill” movement, things took an unexpected turn:
A story you personally took on last season, about the “Eat What You Kill” movement, would you have done that five, ten years ago?
There are a few things I hate more than the NRA. I mean truly. I think they’re pigs. I think they don’t care about human life. I think they are a curse upon the American landscape. So we got that on the record. That said, I’m willing to separate that this story had nothing to do with that. It’s not a gun story. So I would like to think that I would have done it, but I don’t know. Obviously, that was my first experience around killing and guns and hunting.
NRA supporters were quick to offer their rebuttals:
Bryant Gumbel: "I hate the NRA…they're pigs..don't care about human life." http://t.co/5iEGo0UxLA No, they love life enough to protect it

Gumbel has even been dubbed his own, new title:
Hey Bryant Gumbel – I'm not a pig. But you are a sniveling weenie of the highest order. http://t.co/Cb77s3GHzM #2a #nra

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has spoken out against gun ownership. Comedian Rosie O’Donnell, for example, said:
“I don’t care if you want to hunt. I don’t care if you think it’s your right. I say, ‘Sorry.’ It is 1999. We have had enough as a nation. You are not allowed to own a gun, and if you do own a gun I think you should go to prison.”
Soon after she made this comment on her show, it was found that her bodyguard had applied for a concealed carry permit, forcing her to backtrack and say that she thought licensed carriers were “okay.”
