As CPAC wraps up, it is becoming more and more apparent that conservative millennials are no longer just en vogue media talking points, but rather a driving force on the right side of the political spectrum. So what does that mean for the GOP’s future?
It appears that young Republican voters are backing more socially liberal policies, especially in the realm of legalizing marijuana. According to the Pew Research Center, 63% of millennial Republicans support the legalization of marijuana:
There has been a progressive change in views of marijuana usage from generation to generation. Legalization now holds a majority opinion across both parties, with 69% of millennials supporting legalization:
Reason-Rupe conducted their own polls and came to a conclusion that social issues are more of a driving factor for millennials than economic issues:
“A majority—53 percent—of millennials say they would support a candidate who described him or herself as socially liberal and economically conservative, 16 percent were unsure, and 31 percent would oppose such a candidate.
The fact that a socially liberal, fiscally conservative candidate mainly attracts liberals over conservatives indicates that social issues rather than economics largely drive millennials’ political judgments.
It also suggests millennials are more socially liberal than they are economically liberal.”
With several states (as well as Washington D.C.) recently changing their marijuana laws, it may be only a matter of time before other states follow suit.
