Bodybuilding Vet Lost His Leg Serving Our Country… But Then He Took On A New Challenge

Don’t we all have our reasons not to go work out and get into shape? Maybe we’re too tired or busy, or we’re just not in the mood. These feelings are perfectly normal — but what if we lost a leg?

This was the case for Lance Sergeant Mark Smith, who lost his leg during a live ammunition training exercise while preparing for his second tour in Afghanistan.

After his injury, he was formally discharged from service, which was a devastating blow to him. Smith told SWNS.com:

“Being in the Grenadiers was all I ever wanted to do and my wife was saying I was miserable and needing an adrenaline fix.

I’ve always been keen on fitness and just read about body building and this disabled competition and entered without really thinking about it.”

Mark entered into the Pure Elite tournament and began training 5 to 6 days a week. His work definitely paid off:

Mark described his incredible experience in the competition:

“Next thing I’m standing back stage is in these trunks feeling quite exposed and wondering what on earth I was doing.

“But my name was called out first and I got a standing ovation. It was incredible. My wife said it was the happiest I’ve looked since the injury.”

He also explained his hopes for other wounded veterans:

“In the army I always wanted to lead by example and push the boundaries to see how far I could go and now I am trying to boost disabled body building in the UK,” he said.

“I was surprised and disappointed that there weren’t more people doing it.”

“There are thousands and thousands of disabled people and thousands of veterans who could compete and get something from it.”

His impressive showing at the competition earned him a spot in the National Physique Committee Phil Heath Classic.
