In the midst of coverage of the so-called “deflategate” plaguing the New England Patriots and their quarterback, Tom Brady, Fox News host Jenna Lee called up her father to discuss the matter.
Lee’s father is the former quarterback, Bob Lee, who played for the Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis Rams, and the Minnesota Vikings. Bob Lee explained to his daughter and to the viewers that he thinks that the slight deflation of the footballs would be noticeable to a quarterback, especially one as seasoned as Brady.
“I think you can notice a difference in a variety of footballs and they are pumped up a little differently and when they’re used,” he said. “And during the course of the game you’re going to notice a difference.”
Then Jenna posed the question to her father as to whether the referees in the game would be able to notice a difference in the inflation of the ball.
“[The balls] are inspected before the game,” he told Jenna. “But once the game begins there is so much going on, the officials have so much to concentrate on. Unless there was a huge problem with one football I don’t think they would notice.”
After admitting that no one knows what the NFL was going to find in their investigation, Jenna asked her father another viewer question, this time about whether the whole team, the coach or just Tom Brady would know about the deflation.
“Well I would think the quarterback might know about it,” he started in on Brady. “The quarterbacks are allowed to rub the balls down before the game. We did it with Minnesota back in 1970 because when the balls first came out they were very very slick.”
Ultimately, Lee believes that this may result in more surveillance of equipment to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the NFL again.
