As the murder trial of the accused killer of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle continues, it’s being decided whether the jury will hear the taped confession of Eddie Routh. The prosecution is expected to call upon Texas Ranger Danny Briley, who was present during Routh’s confession, to testify against the defendant.
Eddie Routh’s disturbing confession describes his “need” to kill Chris Kyle, stating that it was not simply a “want”:
“I knew if I did not take his soul, he was going to take mine. I had to kill a man today. It wasn’t a want to. It was a need.”
According to the New York Post, the opening remarks made by defense attorney Tim Moore indicate that Routh suffered from PTSD, as well as a state of “psychosis”:
“When he took their lives, he was in a grip of psychosis — psychosis so severe that he did not know what he was doing was wrong,” said Moore. “He thought at that time it was either him or them.”
It appears that even Kyle believed their new shooting range partner to be mentally unstable. Kyle told his friend Chad Littlefield over text, “This dude is straight up nuts,” while they were on their way to the range.
Routh’s lawyers are seeking a verdict of innocence on the grounds of insanity, while the prosecution is seeking a life sentence for Chris Kyle’s killer.
