In St. Clair Shores, Michigan, a local Dairy Queen had been giving away free ice cream cones as “customer appreciation” in celebration of its 75th anniversary.
A group of five girls visited the fast food shop, but a free ice cream cone didn’t seem to be payment enough for their patronage. The girls decided to steal the tip jar sitting on the counter. They even shouted insults at the owner, who chased them to their car.
Beyond the petty theft, what really baffled the DQ owner was what the girls did next:
Instead of making a subtle getaway with their cash, the girls decided to post photos of themselves on Snapchat, immortalizing their crime for all of their friends – and quite a few others – to see.
Liz Hope, owner of the DQ, shared her reaction to the situation with local Fox 2 in Detroit:
“I think they are stupid. I mean, really, who does that? They should be the dumbest criminals,” says Hope.
Luckily for Liz Hope, her customers caught a photo of the girls’ license plate before they got away:
The car is now in the hands of the police, and the girls have been caught.
Hope expressed her desire for the young ladies to learn something from the experience:
“I don’t want them to, you know, go to jail or anything,” she told Fox 2. “I want them to learn a lesson that they shouldn’t be doing things like that. It’s not how they should be growing up.”
Instead, Hope believes the girls should be sentenced to community service.
At the end of the day, this local Dairy Queen still gave out ice cream cones to over 1,000 of its more appreciative patrons.
