While guest hosting for The View, Glee star Naya Rivera and her co-hosts drifted into some unorthodox conversation about hygiene habits, particularly showering habits. One of the hosts, Nicole Wallace, apparently has a habit of showering three times a day, which Rivera responded to.
“I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnic,” Rivera said as Wallace couldn’t help but burst out into a fit of giggles. “I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing.”
Wallace discussed the fact that dermatologists recommend only showering once or twice every every three days, which is her typical shower pattern.
Twitter lit up with discussion about the comments:
my boyfriend is white and i wish i could get him to shower every day @NayaRivera

Most of them were pretty humorous:
@TessaJeanMiller @NayaRivera If showering daily is a "white people thing," what is "not washing your hair but 2x a week"?

FYI I'm a white woman and I don't shower everyday. Unless it's summer time. Plus showering everyday ruins the hair so @NayaRivera

Some days I shower twice a day, other days I'm just a dirty white girl. @NayaRivera http://t.co/vsOFVu5144

Here’s one that quoted Chris Brown:
I don’t see how you can hate from outside of the shower. You can’t even get in @NayaRivera

Others weren’t quite so amused at the race-based stereotyping:

MTV got in on the trolling action:
Dear white people, @NayaRivera thinks you shower too much: http://t.co/QKO3VSAuDB

Some publications found the comments “shocking”:

After Rivera got a bunch of flak, she put this out on Twitter:
When you get out of the shower today, get a sense of humor. Love ya!

Naya Rivera’s comment was controversial for a reason. Instantly, plenty of people were thinking, “what if someone made such a comment about people who aren’t white?”
Since that wasn’t the case, apparently it’s just fine. Or not. Weigh in with your thoughts.
