Despite continuing demonstrations against police departments around the country, there have been efforts to educate the public about pressures that are put on officers in situations in which their lives are put on the line.
Activist Jarrett Maupin underwent a police “use-of-force” training session, where he learned the uncertainty of being rushed by a suspect.
“I didn’t understand how important compliance was, but after going through this; yes my attitude has changed, this happens in 10-15 seconds. People need to comply for their own sake,” said Maupin.
Now, amid this progress, Phoenix, Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has called on the outspoken police critic, Rev. Al Sharpton, to undergo the same police training scenarios to hopefully gain some perspective.
According to Fox 10, Sheriff Arpaio and Rev. Sharpton have a previous history of meeting over certain other issues.
“Let’s come on down here, I think you are the prime guy to do this and learn a lesson,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Sharpton was here in the valley during the immigration rallies in 2010, marching and speaking, he even met Sheriff Arpaio. FOX 10 wanted to be sure the Sheriff wanted to invite Sharpton here. “Yeah, Al I haven’t seen you in a while, we could talk in my office and we’ll put you through the scenario. We had two cops who were killed in New York City, assassinated.”
Team Sharpton seems lukewarm to the idea.
“Despite our differences on immigration, I am all for working with the Sheriff to try to find some ground on proper policing.”
Sharpton’s people have decided that they will look over the story of activist Jerrett Maupin, before announcing their intention to move forward with the training session.
